"I am passionate about sustainability in engineering and not just energy efficiency, but the liveability of spaces, especially around daylight, ventilation, and space design."
Tom has been working in the building services industry in Melbourne since moving from New Zealand in 2013. Originally intent on becoming a pilot, Tom followed his interest in technology and tinkering around with things and undertook an engineering degree. He later received a scholarship to obtain his pilot’s licence. Tom joined ADP in 2015, and believes the ADP vision of ‘creating great environments with great people’ is reflected in the team he works with. He believes that delivering great quality projects is easy when working with a team that is supportive and where everyone’s opinion is valued.
As the Mechanical Team Lead for Melbourne, Tom has enjoyed the many challenges and responsibilities that comes with his role, from building a strong team of engineers to providing leadership to young engineers. Tom is passionate about sustainability in engineering and not just energy efficiency, but the liveability of spaces, especially around daylight, ventilation, and space design. He feels the biggest challenge facing the construction industry is money and justifying to clients the benefits of the “people cost”, the extra cost that comes with designing spaces that people want to live and work in.
Tom has led and worked on a multitude of projects, but his most memorable has been the Esplanade Hotel in St Kilda. The unique historic building provided numerous challenges including heritage overlays, space limitations and retrofitting while retaining the historic charm of the interior. He enjoyed working with a team of architects and other consultants who all understood the importance of building and delivering something creative that respected the building’s history.
