"Some people consider Vertical Transport as the dark arts, and it is our role to shine the light on it."

Matthew was given the opportunity to join ADP to set up its Vertical Transportation team in 2019 and was excited for the challenges he knew it would provide him. With a keen interest in graphic design at school, Matthew saw engineering as way to combine his love of hands-on designing into a practical career.

An important issue he aims to resolve daily, regardless of project size, is communicating the complexities of vertical transportation engineering into a way that is easy for clients and stakeholders to understand, while not undervaluing its importance to a project. Matthew thrives on finding solutions to the minute details of vertical transportation design such as reducing wait times that might only be seconds to us, would be considered a lifetime by Matthew.

Matthew has been involved in more than 600 projects in his career, across a diverse range of sectors. Before joining ADP, he was engaged on West Side Place, a massive four-tower multi-use precinct in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, with the four towers each ranging from 65-81 levels.

He is currently working on The Mansions precinct project which forms part of the city-defining Queens Wharf development in Brisbane as well as the high-end luxury Saint Moritz residential development in St Kilda. It has a completely unique vertical transportation concept, with lifts served directly into apartments, and a complex queueing system so residents don’t share lift journeys. While a complex and difficult project at times, it was a welcome challenge and has offered exceptional learning outcomes.
