The new Cowes Cultural and Community Centre located on Phillip Island will deliver a facility that will showcase the history and culture of the region. The two-level centre will support a range of uses that will boost community engagement and increase services to the growing population. It will incorporate a theatre, library, gallery, museum, community meeting facilities and offices. It is hoped the development will connect the jetty precinct at the northern end of Cowes with the southern retail precinct.
Sitting respectfully amongst the sites existing vegetation and in keeping with the coastal environment, the building will be a source of civic pride. While the top floor will mostly house council staff and be the home of the local genealogical society, the 250-seat theatre, 400-guest capacity function space and outdoor event space offer endless possibilities for the community.
The centre’s contemporary design also incorporates mass timber construction and maximizes natural light with double-height spaces and floor to ceiling glazing. Designed to ‘designed to PassiveHouse standards, Bass Coast Shire aims to maximise energy efficiency and minimise its carbon footprint.
