Burwood Brickworks – Approval paves way for Frasers Property Australia to deliver the world’s most sustainable shopping centre

With DA just approved for the world’s most sustainable shopping centre by Whitehorse City Council, the former brickworks site will be a real industry game changer on the global retail stage.

Located in Melbourne’s Burwood East and over 25,000sqm in size, this ambitious retail development is targeting the Living Building Challenge (LBC) accreditation, a global building certification measuring seven key performance categories across design, water and energy use, ecological values, building materials, equity and health and happiness. Burwood Brickworks will also be one of the first Green Star Design & As-Built v1.1. 6 Star retail buildings.

A world class destination, this retail centre will include a large proportion of food and beverage outlets, specialty shopping space including cinemas, a dining precinct as well as street level and basement car parking and medical centre to meet the demand of the increasingly populated area.

A prominent feature will be the large rooftop garden, allowing natural daylight and fresh air to all occupied areas of the centre. Other key sustainability drivers include; exceptional energy reduction; mixed-mode ventilation; capture, treatment and re-use of water; on-site solar generation; urban agriculture in the form of a large rooftop farm as well biophilic design integrated throughout the building.

Working alongside Frasers Property Australia, providing mechanical, electrical and fire protection services and assistance with the LBC accreditation process, ADP is very proud to be part of this project which is set to be a real game changer on the global retail stage.
